Who are you and why do you like Upton House and Gardens?
We are the Wednesday team of garden volunteers! It is a joy to work here at Upton with the fantastic gardening team, and to learn about all kinds of new plants.
What is your role here?
We work in the gardens, doing many different jobs. The tasks we are given to complete depends on the time of year. These include: picking fruit from the Kitchen Garden, talking to visitors, pruning, weeding – and whatever else needs doing. Even during the winter months we are busy attending to jobs such as looking after the woodland.
What have you particularly enjoyed?
There are many activities that we enjoy. These include: talking to other people who are passionate about gardens, learning new skills, staking the herbaceous border, and turfing the slater border to give it the finishing touch for visitors to enjoy. It is always a delight to see a border looking at its best, as does the herbaceous border at the minute.
What are you next looking forward to?
We look forward to continue harvesting produce from the Kitchen Garden and taking it up to the restaurant. It is always good to know that the fresh produce is used to prepare meals.
One of the seasonal highlights of working in the gardens is seeing the Aster border in all its glory. The first flowers appear in late August and a succession continues throughout September.
