On Friday 14 March two visitors came into Visitor Reception – when our Visitor Reception Team Leader, Andy, asked them if they were here to see anything in particular the reply was “Actually yes, I am planning on coming tomorrow to propose to my girlfriend, Emily, so today I want to see the best places!” After Andy’s inital surprise, he gave them a map and marked on a few places that might fit the bill…

So off they went to enjoy their visit. After checking out some of the recommended places, Josh and his friend Ryan were in the front courtyard planning the big moment…Andy had called me earlier in the day to let me know about their special visit. I went out and asked if they had found a good place for the proposal and if we could do anything to help. With three places in mind, the Long Gallery piano, the steps of the South Terrace and Lady Bearsted’s garden, they were still deciding…

So, Saturday arrived and everyone at Upton was very excited! Luckily I was walking past the Long Gallery and heard the piano being played and noticed it was Josh, this time with his girlfriend. So, the plan started…

Surprise...
– Surprise…

After Emily had played the piano, Josh presented her with a present, a published book that she had written. Josh opened the book, read out his message, and inside was the ring. After Emily had said ‘YES’, we were quick to offer the couple our congratulations and take them for a cream tea in our Restaurant!

She said yes!

She said yes!

Emily enjoyed visiting National Trust places as a child with her family and after finding out that Upton had a piano which people could play, Josh decided Upton could make the perfect backdrop to his ‘big question’. We are so pleased that Upton has become such a special place for them.

There was a definite buzz around Upton for the whole day, what a special event to have taken place. We hope to welcome Josh and Emily back to Upton soon!

Could Upton be the special place for you too?
